*Heat Island Tokyo: Valley of the Wind and Urban Forests Work a Miracle (Japan / Director: Kawada Kaworu / 2006 / 26min.) Waste heat from air-conditioners and radiant heat from buildings and asphalt pavements build up in Tokyo, exacerbating the heat island phenomenon. The film focuses on the effectiveness of using greenery in Shinjuku Gyoen and other areas to keep the city cool, following the recent activities of building "windy roads".

*Crude: The Incredible Journey of Oil (Australia / Director: Richard Smith / 2007 / 90min.) The world's oil fields are deposits of phytoplankton on the ocean floor from the Jurassic period. Will our mass consumption of oil in the last 150 years thrust us back climatically to the warm primeval age when oil fields were formed?

*Restoring Terrace Paddy Fields: Ishibu, Matsuzaki-cho, Izu (Japan / Director: Ohara Seiji / 2007 / 14min.) The familiar scenery of terrace paddy fields characteristic of mountain villages is disappearing due to rapidly declining population and the policy of reducing rice acreage. The film documents the restoration efforts of volunteers and residents and introduces the technology used for the restoration.

*Fishermen in the City (Taiwan / Director: Hong Chun-xiu / 2006 / 62min.) On the bank of a river running by the world's tallest building "Taipei 101" is a hundred-year old fishing village. Fishermen there find their livelihood being eroded by the rapid urban development.

*Planet Earth―Polar Region: The World of Ice (Japan / Director: Ito Yasuhiko / 2006 / 59min.) The film captured Emperor penguins cradling their eggs in the arctic weather of 60 degrees below zero and polar bears hunting in the icy sea. It is a close look at the nature of the polar region, which is suffering the most severe environmental destruction today.

*Thousand Days and a Dream (India / Directors: P. Baburaj & C. Saratchandran / 2006 / 60min.) Local wells in India's Kerala state dried up after Coca Cola pumped up a large volume of underground water. The area's water quality was worsened by the disposal of waste. The people fought back.

*Poor but Selfless: Tanaka Shozo and People who Joined Hands with Him (Japan / Director: Ikeda Hiroo / 2006 / 98min.) "True civilization does not devastate mountains, or rivers, or villages; nor does it kill humans." The film depicts the life of Tanaka Shozo, showing how he and the peasants confronted the Ashio copper-mine poisoning incident.

*Living with Oumi: Lake Biwa (Japan / Director: Niimura Yasuo / 2006 / 30min.) Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake with outstanding freshwater ecosystems, is one of the few ancient lakes left in the world. The film looks at the harmonious relationship between the community and nature, recent crises, and actions towards the future.

*Travelogue of the World's Countryside: China's Yunnan Living with Bamboo (Japan / Director: Zhang Keming / 2007 / 49min.) Rice paddies, villages, and bamboo groves form Yunnan Province's typical landscape. People there live with bamboo. Images of their culture and animals and plants all come alive in the beautiful seasons of China's countryside.

*Animal Factory (Korea / Director: Koo Jung-Hoi / 2007 / 61min.) As the western diet becomes popular, the demand for pork and chicken rises. But do we know what happens at those production sites? Now, the veil is lifted.

*Man and Whale (Japan / Director: Yamamura Koji / 2007 / 2min.) At a school facing the ocean, the old principal was lost in thought looking at the picture of a whale he drew when he was a young boy. Then, he saw something in the sea …

*R?sum? of a Shrimp―the Breeder and the Consumer (Japan / Director: Suzuki Toshiaki / 2004 / 27min.)
The shrimps on our table come from Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and other countries. The film shows us aspects of shrimp production not indicated in their "natural" or "cultured" labels.

*Armed by Nature―What Saved the Coast from the Tsunami? (India,Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand / Directors: Moji Riba & Manori Wijesekera & Yohan Abeynaike / 2006 / 27min.) The December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused serious damages. Investigation of the damages shed light on the fact that mangrove forests, sand dunes, and coral reefs were nature's defense against tsunami. 16:00 End of the Screening

*Village Submerged (Japan / Director: Onishi Nobuo / 2007 / 93min.) Tokuyama Village in Gifu Prefecture used to have 466 households and 1500 residents. The 1976 approval of the Tokuyama Dam construction forced residents to leave the village. Now the dam construction stalled, and 8 residents in 5 households returned to the village to live out their lives.

*The Oryx Return (Qutar / Director: Hafiz Ali Ali / 2007 / 32min.) The Arabian Oryx was extinct once on the Arabian Peninsula. Thanks to a propagation project, they returned to the desert. This unique nature film depicts the animal in lively words and images *

 *Tiger The Death Chronicles (India / Director: Krishnendu Bose / 2007 / 63min.) Despite 30 years of protection policy, the tiger population continues to decline rapidly. In a search for answers, the film zeroes in on development projects and international poaching.

*Bengal Tiger Story of Macheri and Her Cub (Japan / Director: Mori Keiko / 2007 / 110min.) Because tigers live deep in the forest and research on them is limited, they only give the impression of a fierce animal. But as we follow the female tiger Macheri, what we see is an ample love binding the mother and cub.

*Cradle of the Sea―Protecting the Hachi Tidal Flat (Japan / Director: Iwasaki Hirofumi/ 2006 / 54min.) The Hachi tidal flat at the offing of Takehara City in Hiroshima Prefecture is threatened by the plan to develop an artificial seaweed bed. A young man stood up to save the Hachi tidal flat.

*To Live Save Our Saemankun (Korea / Director: Lee Kang-gil / 2006 / 75min.) Saemankun is a vast stretch of tidal flat. People had depended on its abundant seafood. Then a reclamation project began. Seeing their source of livelihood being destroyed, the residents' once active opposition movement is gradually declining

*Plunge of the Penguins (New Zealand / Director: Andrew W. Marshall / 2006 / 20min.) This film depicts how Gentoo penguins live in the harsh Antarctic environment. Parents raise their chicks, the young makes their first journey from the nest, and they survive the winter.


*Sanctuary (Japan / Director: Marutani Hajime / 2006 / 93min.) A large patch of greenery in one corner of Tokyo―it is the Hikarigaoka Park. A sign reads "Fragile plants―do not enter." The film is a unique and frank record of the people attracted to urban greenery. 15:00 End of the Screening
